If you've tried treatment but still don't know why you're in pain, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound may help identify the underlying cause.
Ultrasound can often provide greater clarity regarding the likely source of your symptoms and help guide the most appropriate next steps.
We provide private musculoskeletal ultrasound scans to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues.
Private appointments usually available within days. No referral needed.

We provide comprehensive diagnostic scans, including full written reports, for the following regions:
New patients begin with a £65 consultation. In most cases, your ultrasound scan can be carried out during the same appointment for the additional scan fee shown below.
Shoulder - £200
Elbow and arm - £100
Wrist - £100
Hand - £100
Thigh (quadriceps or hamstring) - £200
Knee and lower leg - £100
Calf and rear ankle - £100
Ankle (front and sides) - £200
Foot - £100
Lateral hip/anterior hip - £100
All scans include: clinical assessment, diagnostic ultrasound scan, explanation of findings, and a comprehensive written medical report emailed to you usually within 48 working hours.
Most patients leave with a clearer understanding of their problem and the most appropriate next steps.

If you are new to the clinic, your first appointment starts with a consultation (£65). This allows us to understand your symptoms, determine whether ultrasound is appropriate, and identify the area that requires assessment.
In most cases, the scan can be carried out during the same appointment for the additional scan fee shown above.
Existing patients who have already been advised that they require a scan can usually book directly without an additional consultation.
Occasionally we may need to assess a small additional area during your appointment. This is not usually necessary, but if it is, we will always discuss this with you beforehand and agree any additional fee before proceeding.

Appropriately qualified musculoskeletal ultrasound practitioner
Did you know, in the UK "sonographer" is not a protected title and ultrasound providers are not legally required to hold any specific qualification? That's why the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) recommend practitioners working outside hospital radiology departments train through programmes accredited by CASE - the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (details here).
We hold a CASE-accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound - the benchmark qualification recognised in professional guidance from the RCR, the Society of Radiographers and BMUS.
Hospital-grade imaging quality
We use the Samsung RS80A – a premium ultrasound system comparable to those used in many NHS radiology and orthopaedic departments. This provides exceptionally clear diagnostic imaging and a level of image quality significantly beyond that of many basic portable scanners.
Musculoskeletal Specialist
Your scan is performed by an MSK specialist and not just a general sonographer technician, ensuring clinical accuracy, relevance to your condition, and meaningful guidance on what to do next. You can ask us all the questions you have at the appointment.
Referrals welcome
We accept referrals from healthcare professionals across West Wales and South Wales, including medical doctors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, osteopaths, chiropractors and registered nurses.
If you are being referred, please contact us before booking. We will require a written referral and can then advise on the most appropriate appointment type.
Please reach us at info@tenbyhealth.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No - you can book directly with us. If you are being referred by a healthcare professional, please contact us before booking as we'll need the written referral first.
The purpose of the scan is not simply to identify abnormalities. Findings are interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment to help guide the most appropriate next steps. Depending on the results, this may include rehabilitation, focused shockwave therapy, activity modification, referral for further imaging, or communication with your GP or referring clinician where appropriate.
The consultation (£65) lets us understand your symptoms and confirm a scan is the right next step - occasionally it isn't, and we would rather tell you that than scan unnecessarily. In most cases, the scan is carried out in the same appointment.
No - we specialise in musculoskeletal ultrasound only (joints, muscles, tendons and soft tissues). We don't provide pregnancy, abdominal or vascular scanning.
Ultrasound is excellent for assessing tendons, muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues in real time. Some conditions are better assessed with MRI or X-ray - if that applies to you, we will explain why and advise on next steps in your initial consultation.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound may be useful when investigating a wide range of tendon, muscle, ligament, bursal and soft tissue problems.
Common reasons people book an ultrasound scan with us include:
• Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries
• Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
• Achilles tendon pain and Achilles tendinopathy
• Plantar heel pain and plantar fasciitis
• Knee pain and ligament injuries
• Muscle tears and sports injuries
• Soft tissue lumps and swellings
• Hamstring injuries
• Ankle ligament injuries and sprains
• Persistent tendon pain that has not improved with treatment
The suitability of ultrasound depends on the specific problem being investigated. During your consultation we can advise whether ultrasound is likely to be helpful or whether another imaging modality may be more appropriate.
Your findings are explained during the appointment and a comprehensive written medical report is usually emailed within 48 working hours.
