CALF, Ankle & Foot ultrasound scans in West Wales

Fast, accurate diagnosis for calf, ankle or foot pain in Pembrokeshire and West Wales

Calf, Ankle or Foot pain that won’t settle?

Struggling with long-term calf, ankle or foot pain, swelling, stiffness, a feeling of instability, or a recent injury can be frustrating - especially when symptoms persist despite rest or treatment.  In some cases, a physical examination alone doesn’t fully explain what’s really going on.

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound allows us to look directly at the calf, ankle and foot structures in real time, helping to identify the underlying cause of symptoms and guide the most appropriate next steps.

An ultrasound scan provides a clear, dynamic view of the tendons, ligaments, plantar fascia, joints, and surrounding soft tissues - helping you get quick answers and move forward with the right plan for recovery.

What’s included in your calf, ankle or foot ultrasound scan:

  • Performed by a qualified musculoskeletal sonographer (PgC in Medical Ultrasound)
  • Hospital-grade imaging system (Samsung RS80A)
  • Full report usually within 48 hours
  • No referral needed (referrals are also accepted)
  • Includes clinical consultation and explanation of findings
  • Safe, comfortable & free from ionising radiation

Why have a calf, ankle & foot ultrasound scan?

The calf, ankle and foot contain many structures that can be injured during walking, running, sport, or everyday activities. Ultrasound can detect tendon tears, ligament sprains, inflammation, scar tissue, nerve irritation, joint swelling, plantar fascia issues and more - all with real-time imaging while you move.

If you’re experiencing pain when walking, standing, running, or after a twist/fall, or if you have swelling, stiffness, weakness or persistent discomfort, ultrasound can provide fast, detailed answers.

Common reasons for a calf, ankle or foot ultrasound scan include:

  • Achilles tendinopathy or tears
  • Plantar fasciitis or plantar fascia tears
  • Calf muscle tear - (Sudden calf swelling, heat, or unexplained pain can occasionally indicate a blood clot (DVT), which requires urgent medical assessment rather than an MSK scan - contact your GP or NHS 111 if you're concerned ).
  • Ankle ligament sprains (ATFL, CFL, PTFL, deltoid ligament)
  • Peroneal tendon subluxation
  • Tendon tears, inflammation, entrapment, synovitis and tendinosis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Bursitis or soft-tissue swelling
  • Plantar plate tears
  • Suspected ganglion or soft-tissue cyst
  • Post-injury assessment after a twist, sprain, or fall

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't need to know in advance - that's exactly what your consultation is for. If you're unsure whether ultrasound is the right step, simply book a new patient consultation and we'll assess your symptoms, examine the area, and advise honestly on whether a scan is likely to help. If a scan isn't needed, we can often still help - treatment such as manual therapy or a tailored rehabilitation plan may be appropriate, and we'll talk you through the best path forward.

No referral is required - you can book directly. If you're self-referring, your appointment will begin with a short new patient consultation to confirm ultrasound is the right next step. GP, physiotherapist and other clinician referrals are also welcome.

Not at all. Your consultation will confirm exactly which area and structures need assessing, so you don't need to pinpoint the exact location or price beforehand - we'll guide you to the right scan and fee on the day.

Yes. Ultrasound is well suited to assessing both the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia, helping identify tears, thickening, or degenerative changes and guide the right treatment approach.

A clear scan is still useful information - it helps rule out structural causes and points us toward what to look at next, whether that's a different assessment or a referral. It can also give you the reassurance needed to proceed confidently with treatment or activity.

Appointments are usually available within days, with a full written report typically emailed within 48 working hours.
