Focused Shockwave Therapy is a modern, non-invasive treatment used to support healing in chronically irritated or injured tendon and soft-tissue structures.
At Tenby Health, we combine focused shockwave therapy with diagnostic ultrasound imaging and rehabilitation exercise. This allows us to deliver a comprehensive tendon and soft-tissue care pathway - from accurate diagnosis, to targeted treatment, to long-term management - all under one roof.
How Focused Shockwave Therapy Works
Focused shockwave uses high-energy sound waves to concentrate energy at a precise point deep within tissue, supporting the body's natural repair processes.
This includes:
It is particularly effective where healing has plateaued in longer-standing conditions.

Focused shockwave therapy is most commonly used for chronic tendon-related conditions, where the tissue has become irritated, overloaded, or degenerative over time.
Conditions commonly assessed for suitability include:
Suitability is always assessed on an individual basis - always starting with an initial consultation. Please book under 'New Patient Consultation' (selected under Chiropractic Clinic).

A focused shockwave appointment typically lasts around 15 minutes and includes a brief reassessment followed by treatment delivery. You will be positioned comfortably, and gel is applied to optimise energy transfer.
Many people are offered a short course of treatment, typically 3–5 sessions, depending on the condition and individual case needs. Some patients notice improvement during the early stages of care, while others experience more gradual change over time.
We only recommend shockwave therapy when it is clinically appropriate. If it is not the right option for you, we will always discuss suitable alternatives.

Why our shockwave is different
If you've been dealing with tendon pain for months, been told to rest, tried physio, maybe even had an injection that wore off - focused shockwave therapy is often what finally moves things forward. We regularly see patients who've exhausted other options and are frustrated that nothing has stuck. For the right presentation, focused shockwave doesn't just manage the pain - it stimulates the tissue to actually heal.
Most clinics that offer shockwave therapy use radial shockwave - a device that disperses energy broadly through the surface of the tissue, suited best for muscle issues. Radial shockwave certainly has its uses (which is why we also offer it at Tenby Health for muscle issues), but it cannot target a specific structure at depth, and it is typically applied without any imaging to confirm what's actually being treated. It also tends to be much more uncomfortable for tendon problems and requires many more sessions to be effective.
Focused shockwave is a fundamentally different technology. It concentrates energy at a precise point deep within tissue, which means it can reach structures that radial shockwave simply cannot. Widely recognised as one of the most effective non-surgical options for persistent tendon problems, it works by stimulating the body's natural healing response at exactly the right location.
But that precision means it must be used correctly. While focused shockwave is incredibly safe when delivered by a trained professional, if applied to the wrong structure, at the wrong depth, or to a presentation where shockwave isn't appropriate, it can potentially cause harm rather than help. This is why we insist on ultrasound assessment before every focused shockwave treatment. It means we can see exactly what we're treating, confirm the technology is safe and appropriate for your specific presentation, and deliver treatment to precisely the right location. No guesswork. No scattergun approach.
Rehabilitation is included in every package for the same reason. Focused shockwave stimulates the healing response within the tendon but if the loading patterns, movement mechanics, or strength deficits that caused the problem in the first place aren't addressed, the problem comes back. Rehab isn't optional; it's what turns short-term improvement into lasting recovery. Most shockwave clinics offer the treatment. We offer the complete pathway.
What to do next
If a tendon problem or persistent soft-tissue pain is affecting your daily life, the most important first step is a proper assessment.
Book a new patient consultation (£65) and we will assess your symptoms, confirm the diagnosis, and explain your options clearly - whether that’s shockwave, rehabilitation, diagnostic ultrasound, or a combination. Most people leave their first appointment knowing what’s going on for the first time.
